Xanthelasma Removal Sydney NSW

What is Xanthelasma?

Xanthelasmas are yellow looking skin plaques or patches situated around the upper and lower eyelids. They are accumulations of yellow cholesterol or fat deposits in the skin.

While these deposits are not harmful, you should always have them checked by a doctor as they can be a sign of an underlying condition. As they consist of cholesterol they may indicate that you are suffering from high cholesterol levels. This is why it’s important for your doctor to assess your condition.

Receive modern treatment through laser

Your xanthelasma usually won’t go away on its own and the growths will either stay the same size or increase in size over time. At Áda Aesthetic Medicine, we are experts in modern, non-surgical treatment of xanthelasma and advocate the use of laser rather than direct surgical excision.

In experienced hands, laser can give very good cosmetic results. Compared to cryotherapy or trichloroacetic acid treatment, laser is much easier to control, hence reducing the risk of side effects.

What type of laser is used?

At Áda Aesthetic Medicine, we have different lasers which can be used to correct xanthelasma.

  • YAG laser can be used. It is non-ablative meaning the skin surface is not removed. This will need repeated treatments to completely remove the fat deposits.
  • Ablative laser carbon dioxide and/or erbium are the main lasers used as it usually only needs single treatment because it is more predictable.

What are the complications?

  • Loss of skin pigmentation in area where fat deposit was removed. This can be quite noticeable if patient has darker skin.
  • Persistent redness or hyper pigmentation in treated area.
  • Scar tissue is rare side effect at our clinic.
  • It is possible for xanthelasma to return. This is one of the main reasons we do not advocate surgical removal as it can leave a scar, and further surgical excisions may result in excess skin removal.

At your consultation with our doctors, we will discuss your concerns and expectations in depth. We will discuss a treatment plan and determine the best course of action for your unique condition
