Stretchmark Removal Sydney NSW

Stretchmarks that appear after rapid expansion of skin for example after pregnancy, rapid weight gain, body building or just normal growth spurt during teenage years can be a very noticeable and embarrassing problem.

Stretchmarks are simply scar tissue as a result of the healing process to repair the overstretched skin.

Can stretchmarks be removed?

At present there are a number of treatments available for stretchmarks but none can completely remove all evidence of them. The best results at present will reduce the appearance of the stretchmarks so they blend in better with surrounding normal skin.

What are the best treatments for stretchmarks?

For red stretchmarks, which are generally newer, vascular lasers are the best choice.

For older silvery, white or pale stretchmarks fractional laser is at present the more effective option. At Áda we use 1540nm or carbon dioxide fractional lasers depending on skin type and severity of the stretchmarks. The Palomar 1540nm fractional laser is the only laser with FDA approval for treating stretchmarks and is the main laser we use in our clinic.

A newer energy device that has shown some promise is fractional radiofrequency (RF). We are lacking larger studies to confirm or deny its usefulness in treating stretchmarks but this treatment is available at Áda.

PRP (Platelet Rich Plasma) therapy is also being used either as stand-alone therapy or in combination with medical micro-needling or fractional laser. Again, early indications are that it has some promise but there are no studies yet to show how effective it is. This therapy is also available at Áda.

Are there any creams that can help?

There are many over-the-counter creams that claim to help remove stretchmarks. None have any proof that they can do this. The only cream that has shown to have some benefit in helping stretchmarks is the prescription retinoic acid creams such as Retin A, Stieva A, Retrieve.

How many laser treatments are needed?

All the current laser treatments, be it vascular or fractional laser, will require a series of treatment sessions. Usually at least 3 treatment sessions are needed, at 6-8 week intervals. On average most need 6 sessions for the best results.

How much will laser treatment cost?

Treatment cost will vary depending on the number and size of stretchmarks and the type of laser needed. Our doctors will assess whether you are suitable and give you a price quote.

Who will be doing my laser treatments?

At Áda our experienced laser doctors do all consultations, treatment planning and all treatments. No ‘laser technicians’ or nurses are used at any Áda clinic.
