How does tattoo removal work?

Ever wondered how  laser tattoo removal actually works? We break down the process for you so there will be no surprises should you choose to go ahead with the treatment.

Tattoos can be beautiful additions to your body representing something meaningful to the wearer. However, over time meaning can change as can taste. If you regret the tattoo you got in your youth or would prefer a cleaner look, tattoo removal may be an option for you. No longer do you have to suffer through permanent inking – laser tattoo removal is your best opportunity to remove your unwanted tattoo.

So – how does laser tattoo removal work?

Laser tattoo removal at Ada Aesthetic Medicine utilises either the Q-switched Ruby or Q-switched Nd: YAG lasers to produce a nanosecond energy pulse. The ink that makes up your unwanted tattoo selectively absorbs this energy and is then broken down into smaller and smaller particles. Smaller ink particles are able to be removed naturally by your body’s lymph system.

This process continues each session until the tattoo has faded to an acceptable appearance. A number of sessions necessary will depend on your own personal situation – how big the tattoo is, which area of the body the tattoo is, what colours make up the tattoo, amount of ink deposited and how faint you want the tattoo to become.

Tattoo removal method

If you are thinking about getting your tattoo removed the best thing for you to do is to book an initial consultation with one of Ada Aesthetic Medicine’s doctors. We will be able to assess your tattoo, advise you about your situation and provide you with a quote and estimated treatment time. There will be no obligation to continue with treatment with us after this consultation it is simply the best place to get the correct information tailored to your specific situation.

Once you decide to go ahead with the treatment we will schedule your appointments for a time that is convenient for you. During your appointment, you will be provided with protective eye shields to ensure your absolute safety throughout. We will also first test your skin’s reaction to the laser to determine the most effective energy level for your treatment. From here we will activate the chosen laser light onto the surface of the skin. The pulsation of light from the laser will feel similar to a rubber band snapping against the skin.  We can also administer numbing cream or injection if you find the treatment painful. After each treatment, your tattoo will become progressively lighter and less noticeable.

There is some downtime involved with laser tattoo removal. We will apply an ice pack to soothe the area directly after the treatment concludes and apply antiseptic cream which you can continue to  apply over the next few days. We will bandage the area to protect it and you can expect some bruising and crusting of the skin. Depending on the placement of your tattoo this can be covered by clothing.
