Smoothing wrinkles

As we age, our skin begins to lose elasticity and wrinkles and fine lines occur.

It is a perfectly natural part of ageing. Other causes of wrinkles and fine lines include sun damage, muscle movement, injury and smoking. Sometimes there can even be asymmetry in the wrinkles; for instance, if you tend to sleep on your right side more so than your left, you may notice the right side of your face looks slightly more aged than the left.

Fine lines and wrinkles arise because of irregular thickening of the dermis and because of a decrease in the amount of water held by the epidermis. This is mainly caused by sun damage and exposure to environmental toxins, particularly tobacco smoke.

It is important to note that factors such as smoking will exacerbate wrinkles; however, even with a healthy lifestyle with minimal exposure to the sun, ageing and wrinkles will occur at some point – it is a fact of life.

We laugh, smile, frown and cry, it’s part of living. And as you age, each of these actions will begin to create the formation of wrinkles and fine lines on your face.

Treating fine lines and wrinkles

At Ada Aesthetic Medicine, there are many ways in which we can reduce the appearance of fine lines and wrinkles, one of these ways is by using neuromodulators – also known as muscle relaxant injections. These injections help you to fight the effects of ageing both quickly and safely.

How it works: A tiny amount of the neuromodulator is injected directly into the underlying muscle, causing it to relax and gradually smooth out the appearance of the overlying skin. The effects typically last about 3 months.

Many patients may be concerned about whether or not this treatment is painful, and the good news is that pain when receiving these injections is typically minimal. If requested, a topical anaesthetic or ice pack can be applied prior to the treatment.

One of the great benefits of these injections is that there is virtually no recovery time! Which means that you will be able to resume your usual activities the following day. You may experience a little bit of bruising, though this should disappear in a few days – sometimes even a few hours.

Patients should take care not to rub treated areas as this could cause the neuromodulator to migrate to another area.

What are neuromodulators used for?

In aesthetic medicine, neuromodulators are used for:

  • Removing excessive expression lines and wrinkles, e.g. frown lines, smile lines
  • Facial slimming by reducing muscle mass at the side of the jaw (the masseter muscles)
  • Eyebrow lifting and reshaping non-surgically
  • Upper neck lifting and to smoothen the jawline, i.e. the Nefertiti lift

If you are interested in achieving a softer, more youthful appearance (without surgery) this treatment may be the answer for you.
