Skin types and ageing

Skin Types
Did you know that not all skin functions in the same manner? There are three main skin types:
Oily Skin: This is described as shiny skin – particularly in the T-zone area. You may have enlarged pores and may be prone to blackheads and breakouts due to overproduction of the sebaceous (oil-producing) glands.
Dry Skin: dry skin usually feels tight, especially after cleansing. You may notice that your skin becomes drier the older you get. This skin fluctuation can be attributed to hormones. You may also experience flaky skin.
Combination Skin: Combination skin means you may have a slightly oily T-zone with drier cheeks and patches of dry spots here and there. You may also have larger pores on your cheeks and possibly your forehead. This skin type has medium pores, a smooth and even texture, good circulation, and a healthy colour.
Skin types and ageing
There is a general idea that those who have oily skin may “age better” and while the different skin types may age differently, there is no “better” skin type when it comes to the ageing process. Each skin type will experience the effects of ageing, here’s how the process may look on the various skin types:
Dry skin: If you have dry skin, you will notice your skin becoming thinner as you age, showing show finer, superficial lines along with visible broken capillaries. Thinner skins are missing some of that cushion under the skin that gives it a plumper look. However, your texture will be smoother because their pores will be smaller due to less oil secretion.
Oily Skin: If you have oily skin, you will notice less of the fine “crinkly” lines under your eyes. This is due to the fact that you have more natural padding (from fat cells) in your face which provides a nice cushion to prevent the skin from caving in when lines and wrinkles begin to form. However, since your skin is thicker and therefore heavier, as you age, you may experience deeper lines and more loss of tone.
Combination Skin: The ageing process of combination skin will have a combination of the typical ageing signs seen in those with dry skin as well as those with oily skin.
As you can see, all skin types age, and there is no one who is “better off” when it comes to the ageing process. Ageing does not discriminate when it comes to your skin type, and regardless of how oily/dry your skin is, taking proper care will help to minimise the signs of ageing associated with your particular kin type.
