Skin pigmentation found to have significant role in perceived age and beauty

Wrinkles aren’t the only thing to worry about in terms of an ageing look. A study by Austrian socio-biologists has found, “whether a woman is 17 or 70, the contrast of skin tone plays a significant role in the way her age, beauty and health is perceived.”

What is skin pigmentation?

When skin is hydrated and has an even tone light bounces of it producing a vibrant, healthy glow. In contrast, when there is an uneven tone, whether by patches of darker colours, freckles or conditions such as melasma it produces a dull effect. These mismatched, uneven tones and dark patches are called skin pigmentation. This dull look has been found to influence the way age and beauty are perceived by onlookers.

Who can be affected by skin pigmentation?

The simple answer is everyone! There are a few different types of skin pigmentation that can affect different groups of people. Firstly, sun damage can produce sun spots or hyperpigmentation across your face and exposed skin. This can affect most people but those who spend a lot of time outdoors or driving are particularly susceptible.

Melasma is a condition that produces irregularly shaped spots across the forehead, cheeks and upper lip. This condition can be caused by hormones related to pregnancy. Post-inflammatory hyperpigmentation produces spots on the skin caused by inflammation of the skin (a pimple, mark or cut). This condition affects Asian skin and darker skin tones. Freckles are hereditary and thought to be associated with overactive melanocytes. While they lessen with age they can still contribute to that dull tone inhibiting the youthful glow we all desire.

How can skin pigmentation be treated?

Ada Aesthetic Medicine recommends treating irregular pigmentation with our laser treatments. We use a range of lasers including our Q-switched Ruby and Nd:YAG lasers which target deep underlying skin pigmentation. We also offer IPL, BBL and fractional lasers to treat sun damage and some superficial  pigmentation.

We are able to remove large spots, freckles and even birthmarks, however, if you have a concern about a mark or discolouration it’s best to come in and see us so we can assess your situation individually.

Smaller spots and darker areas are expected to heal quickly however, there will be some down time after larger, more severe treatments. The crusting will peel off after about 5-7 days but you should be able to cover the area with makeup before then. Redness in the area can last up to 10 days.
