Sun and Ageing

As we grow older, our skin becomes weaker and loses elasticity, and this is what causes wrinkles

Over time our collagen loses its ability to stretch and recoil, which then develops wrinkles and age spots that make us look much older than we are. It is, however, possible to turn back the clock and regain much of our skin’s youthful glow and fresh appearance.

The standard way to avoid this damage to your skin is to incorporate a high quality SPF lotion into your regime as well as limit the amount of time you spend in the sun.

Signs of Sun damage include:

  • Premature ageing of skin
  • Pigmentation – Freckles
  • Fine Lines
  • Changes in skin texture
  • Sun spots

It is important to know that sun damage for many skin types may not be visible after the initial damage has occurred. It is important to get to know your own skin and its boundaries to the sun. When you understand your own skin, you can learn to identify possible areas of sun damage, and bring them to the attention of your doctor as early as possible.

Once we notice the sun damage to our skin, what measures can we take to improve our appearance?

One way to reverse the sight of fine lines caused by sun damage is the use of dermal fillers. This procedure is used to reduce lines, wrinkles, restore volume loss due to sun damage and premature ageing, all while increasing and enhancing volume. The most popular fillers are the polysaccharide or “sugar based” hyaluron gels. Other fillers used are the dermal/collagen stimulator fillers which are used for volumising and contouring the face.

Another non-invasive measure to reduce the signs of sun damage is a non-surgical, non-invasive technique, where a stream of micro crystals is gently passed over the skin via a small suction handpiece. This technique is used to remove dry flaky skin cells from the skin’s surface, which then leaves it smooth and fresh. Additionally, the circulation to the skin beneath is stimulated which replaces older skin with fresh, younger cells.

Repetitive microdermabrasion treatments can promote new collagen growth and cell renewal. This gives your skin a healthy surface with improved elasticity, texture, colour and overall appearance.

Follow the sun safe steps!

The greatest way to be sun safe this summer is to ensure you follow these regimes, this will assist you in maintaining your youthful skin appearance:

  1. Wear a SPF 15 or higher lotion/moisturiser. Depending on if you have fair skin/hair, you may be required to apply a higher SPF.
  2. If attending the beach, apply a waterproof “broad spectrum” sunscreen!
  3. Reapply sunscreen often if you are exposed to the sun for over 2 hours.
  4. Sun exposure is healthy in small doses, just ensure you are protected.
  5. Like the vast majority of our treatments, after Microdermabrasion it is highly recommended to avoid extensive sun exposure as your skin is refreshed and can be more susceptible to damage.
