Leg Vein Treatment Sydney NSW

Prominent superficial leg veins may develop after pregnancy, in standing vocations such as hair dressing, teachers, shop assistants or it may be hereditary.

What treatment is available for small leg veins?

The treatment of choice for smaller leg veins is still sclerotherapy, often called microsclerotherapy. It is a non-invasive procedure where a very fine needle is used to inject a solution into the small vein. The solution will injure the vein wall causing the vein to close down and be reabsorbed.

Is laser better for small surface vein treatment?

At present the treatment of choice for small surface veins remains to be microsclerotherapy. This is supported by clinical studies and is also our own experience. Though new development in vascular lasers such as long pulse KTP and Nd:YAG has enabled us to achieve better results than in the past, it is still not as reliable, quick or cost-effective as microsclerotherapy.

How are larger varicose veins treated?

If large varicose veins are the underlying problem then these will need to be investigated further by ultrasound imaging. This will help to determine the best treatment option, which may be ultrasound-guided sclerotherapy or alternatively endovenous laser or RF vein wall ablation.

At Áda clinic we have a special interest in small leg vein treatment, if you require larger varicose vein treatment we will refer you to a specialist in phlebology who can treat the large vein problem.

How many treatments are needed for small leg veins?

Successful treatment may require a series of visits to achieve the best outcome. Usually 2-3 treatments will achieve removal of the majority of smaller leg veins.

Bandaging or wearing compression stockings after treatment will be important to get a better outcome for larger and more extensive networks of veins undergoing treatment.

When would we consider using laser for small leg veins?

In the following cases we would consider laser therapy:

  • Failure to respond to microsclerotherapy
  • Patients who experience side effects after injections
  • Veins too small for injecting needles
  • Allergy to injecting solution
  • If the veins are less than 4mm in diameter

Who will be doing vein treatments?
