Can lasers & IPL devices remove hair permanently?

Laser and broadband IPL (intense pulsed light) devices can claim success in long-term delay of hair growth. ‘Permanent hair reduction’ refers to a reduction in the number of hairs regrowing – hairs which are thinner, smaller and lighter than prior to laser treatment, with results lasting at least 12 months.

How many treatments are required?

Achieving such results requires a series of treatments at regular intervals. Individual response to treatment will depend on many factors such as the area treated, colour and the size of the hair, ethnicity, age, metabolism and hormonal influences. To maintain these results, many people will need to return for touch-up treatments on any new hair regrowth maybe once or twice per year.

How does it work?

The laser light or broadband IPL specifically targets the hair root deep in the skin, heating and injuring it during its growth phase, which causes it to become dormant and delays its growth.

Which colour hair responds best?

Dark hair on fair skin will respond optimally. Darker skin types can also be treated, using specific treatment settings. Blonde, red, grey and white hairs are less likely to respond to laser treatment.

Is the treatment painful?

At Áda we have 3 hair removal devices:

  • Long pulse Nd: YAG laser
  • Q switched Nd: YAG Laser
  • BBL broad band light device

Our long pulse laser and IPL have cooling handpieces, which minimise discomfort. The Q-switched Nd:Yag laser feels like a warm prickle and is well tolerated.

Laser and broadband IPL are quicker, less painful and safer than most alternative methods and in the long term will save you time and money.

Is there any downtime or side effects?

With our techniques, there is usually very little downtime. Most commonly there is a slight pinkness in the treated area for a short time.

Undesirable side effects such as blistering and temporary skin darkening or lightening are rare using our techniques. We avoid treating sun-tanned skin, and use appropriate settings for different skin types.

What other conditions can be treated this way?

Of particular interest is treatment for people with sensitive skin who suffer from “shaving rash” (also known as pseudofolliculitis barbae.) Laser can offer significant relief from this condition.

Who will be doing the laser treatments?

At Áda Aesthetic Medicine only experienced laser doctors complete all consultations and all laser/IPL treatments.  No ‘laser technicians’ or dermal nurses are used at any Áda clinic.
