Is collagen induction therapy right for you?

Collagen Induction Therapy is a form of micro needling used to promote collagen production.
Collagen Induction Therapy, or CIT is a micro-needling treatment used for anti-ageing purposes. It can help improve the appearance of wrinkles, fine lines and scarring.
The treatment utilises tiny needles or micro-needles on a medical-grade roller that is moved over the skin to create tiny, evenly-spaced puncture wounds on the skin. This process stimulates the body’s natural collagen production by generating a wound healing response. Minimal trauma is caused when creating the microscopic punctures in the skin. A topical local anesthetic can be used to minimise any discomfort. By damaging the skin, the body is encouraged to produce more collagen and elastin. This helps it thicken and ‘plump up’ the skin. The procedure can be performed on the face and body.
Patients need roughly five treatment sessions in order to see results. These results are often evident a few days after the first procedure and improve with time as well as after each procedure in the treatment plan.
Benefits of CIT
The process of collagen induction therapy is suited to a wide variety of skin types, it can smooth the skin and improve the appearance of wrinkles, fine lines and scars.
This treatment is also less expensive than laser therapy used for anti-ageing purposes and is arguably, equally as effective. Patients will notice that there is less downtime required after this treatment in contrast to laser therapy. Many patients describe CIT as yielding “better” results than laser for “less money.”
Various areas can be treated using collagen induction therapy, including the face, neck décolleté and body.
As an added bonus, collagen induction therapy can be used on all skin types!
For many people, the “natural” element of collagen induction therapy is seen to be appealing. The treatment does not utilise any harsh chemicals which could cause allergic or adverse reactions of the skin.
What Happens During Treatment?
Before you undergo treatment, it is important to have a consultation with a qualified practitioner to discuss your ideal outcomes. This is also a good time to assess whether or not you will be a good candidate for the procedure. Once your practitioner has deemed you a good candidate, a medical history will usually be taken and you will be asked to sign a consent form to make sure you fully understand what the procedure involves and any associated risks and complications.
You should arrive at your treatment with clean, moisturised skin. The length of the needles used will vary according to your specific treatment as longer needles penetrate deeper into the skin and produce more dramatic results. Your treatment time can be anything between ten minutes to an hour. The length of treatment will depend on the area being treated.
Your practitioner may apply a local anesthetic to the area prior to the procedure to help minimise any discomfort you may experience.
Though the treatment does initially seek to create trauma to the skin, you can feel at ease in the knowledge that the needles used are incredibly small and any initial damage that has been cause is minimal.
After the treatment, you may notice some redness on the area that was subjected to the needles, however this will go away after a few hours. You may also experience slight bleeding or bruising, however this should fade after about 24 – 72 hours. It can take between four to eight weeks before you start to fully see the benefits. A series of between two and five treatments is usually recommended to achieve maximum results.
