Why you should avoid the sun after skin treatments

Certain treatments can leave the skin vulnerable to sun damage.

If you are planning a non-surgical treatment to improve the condition and appearance of your skin, there are a few things you should consider before you go ahead with your procedure of choice. One of the most important things you should know when it comes to achieving and maintaining excellent results is that you will need to limit your exposure to the sun for the sake of your skin. While it is not possible to avoid the sun completely — our skins are constantly affected by ultraviolet rays in our day to day lives — it is worth knowing which procedures require more sun protection than others. Read on to find out more about which treatments require limited sun exposure, and why you should always protect your skin from harsh rays…

1. Be mindful of the sun after dermal fillers

While it is best to stay away from sunbathing and exposure to extreme heat after your dermal filler treatment, you do not need to completely avoid exposure to the sun as long as you apply sunscreen every day. In fact, even if you haven’t had dermal fillers, you should incorporate a good quality sunscreen into your daily skincare routine to protect against UV damage that can cause serious health and cosmetic problems in the long-term.

If, however, you experience considerable bruising after your dermal filler treatment, your practitioner may recommend that you avoid the sun until you have recovered completely from this side-effect.

2. Avoid the sun after skin resurfacing

If you choose to undergo any procedure that involves resurfacing or retexturing of the skin, it is important that you avoid exposure to the sun before and after your treatment. This includes laser treatments such as IPL photorejuvenation and fractional lasers, as well as micro needling and PRP.

Laser resurfacing treatments involve the removal of the top layer of skin and cause a scab to form before new skin is revealed. It is important that you don’t expose this new layer of skin to the sun in its early stages as it can be easily damaged and discoloured. Even when your skin has healed from the treatment, it is advisable that you wear a sunscreen with an SPF of 50 or higher every day, and that you wear a hat anytime that you are in the sun.

3. Practice caution after a chemical peel

After a chemical peel, you might notice that your skin is particularly sensitive. Most patients are advised to stay out of the sun as much as possible after their treatment as the skin is especially susceptible to sun damage during this time. Even if you wear sunscreen, your skin will be vulnerable to both UVA and UVB rays. That said, the sun will not affect the results of your chemical peel, but too much time outdoors may increase your risk of issues like pigmentation and sun spots.
