What is the PRP process?
PRP (platelet rich plasma) is a technique that uses the patient’s own cells to stimulate and accelerate regeneration of aged and damaged skin.
Platelet cells have an important role in our body’s everyday repair mechanism. Our platelets are crucial in releasing chemical signals to initiate the release of various growth factors, as well as stimulating cell proliferation to repair and regenerate damaged tissue. So being able to increase the number of platelets in an area of damaged or injured skin could enhance or magnify this bio-stimulatory effect of renewing the dermis.
Over the last 10 years, this concept has been studied and utilised in many areas of medicine such as orthopaedics, plastic surgery and is now being utilised in cosmetic and regenerative medicine.
Is PRP proven treatment in aesthetic dermatology?
At present there are no double-blinded studies to prove PRP claims. There are some small studies to suggest that PRP may be able to give promising results.
What areas can be treated?
PRP is used on its own or combined with other non-surgical treatments to promote healing and skin regeneration of damaged skin. It has been used as a dermal stimulator to promote dermal volumisation in skin ageing:
- Crepe skin around the eyes
- Cheek and mid face
- Neck
- Chest and décolletage
- Back of hands and arms and other skin areas
How is PRP performed?
Similar to having a blood test, a small sample of your blood is drawn from your arm vein then placed immediately into a centrifuge. The blood is spun at high speed to separate the different cells and this process leaves a layer of platelet rich plasma. This PRP can then be drawn into a syringe and applied to your skin by injection or applied topically after a skin resurfacing procedure e.g. fractional laser or with micro-needling (Dermastamp) treatment.
A local anaesthetic cream is applied at least 30 minutes prior to injecting the PRP.
What can I expect from PRP treatment?
Results may begin to be seen at 3 weeks and can gradually improve over 3 months. Improvement in skin quality, texture and tone can be expected. Combining PRP with other therapies such as laser, IPL or fractional RF can enhance results.
Advanced wrinkling is unlikely to respond. Smoking, drugs and alcohol usage will reduce response.
Most people will require more than 1 treatment. At least 3 treatments at 4-week intervals are usually recommended.
How long do results last for?
Treatment results will vary depending on the health and age of your skin. Results can last 12-18 months, so touch up treatments are recommended to maintain the results.
Are there any side effects?
Bruising, swelling or redness may occur for 2-3 days. Rarely this may take up to 2 weeks to completely resolve. Rare side effects include infection, nerve trauma, haematoma and very rarely a hypersensitivity reaction.
How much will it cost?
The price of PRP is determined by the doctor and will depend on the number of test tubes of PRP needed to cover the area. For example one tube will usually be enough to do around both eyes, back of both hands require two tubes and face and neck need four tubes.
Who will do my PRP treatments?

Is anyone not suitable for PRP?
Contraindications to PRP treatment include:
- Smokers (caution)
- Platelet dysfunction syndrome
- Critical thrombocytopenia
- Hypofibrinogenaemia
- Haemodynamic instability
- Sepsis
- Acute and chronic Infections
- Chronic liver pathology
- Anti-coagulation therapy
